Maureen Young is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who earned her Master’s of Social Work at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Maureen’s undergraduate education was focused in Criminal Justice and Psychology. Maureen chose to complete her graduate schooling in Anchorage due to a strong desire to provide excellent care for adolescents and families in the community in which she was raised. Prior to beginning her career as a therapist, Maureen skated professionally with Disney On Ice. She also coached local aspiring figure skaters of all levels for a decade and she brings the gifts of that coaching experience to her practice. As a coach Maureen demonstrated a long history of helping children overcome challenges and realize their athletic potential.
Maureen began her career in mental health with 5 years as the Clinical Therapist of an adolescent long-term residential treatment unit at Alaska Child & Family. In that role, Maureen gained invaluable experience working with the high acuity needs of children and their families facing a wide range of issues including depression, anxiety, self-harm, trauma, FASD, sexualized behaviors, bipolar disorder, substance abuse, gender dysphoria, blended family discord, eating disorders, conduct disorder, and major aggression. Maureen is skilled in crisis management and facilitating the coordination of an interdisciplinary team in supporting her clients when needed. Prior to opening Pemberton & Young Counseling, Maureen spent eight years in private practice at Fuller Diagnostics, LLC providing outpatient individual, family, and group therapy. Maureen utilizes psychodynamic, EMDR, cognitive/dialectical behavioral and strengths-based approaches to treatment and especially enjoys helping struggling adolescents take steps towards successful adulthood. Maureen works with ages twelve through early adulthood as well as with adult clients needing parenting support.
